Rattigan by Benedict Cumberbatch will be broadcast on BBC4 and will see the actor draw on his own experiences of performing the playwright’s works to argue that “Rattigan’s plays remain some of the most brilliantly written, emotionally powerful social satires of the 20th century”.
The documentary will also look at Rattigan’s personal life and meet performers of his work today.
It forms part of BBC4’s spring and summer season, which also includes a weekend of programming dedicated to contemporary dance.
As part of this, the channel will broadcast Sadler’s Wells’ production of the Pet Shop Boys and Javier De Frutos collaboration The Most Incredible Thing.
Alongside this, the BBC will broadcast a documentary that the Corporation said will “unlock the mysteries and debunk the myths surrounding contemporary dance”.
Drama on BBC4 includes a new programme starring Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan as sixties supermodel Jean Shrimpton.
The drama explores her relationship with photographer David Bailey and is called We’ll Take Manhattan.
Meanwhile, Maxine Peake will star in Room at the Top, a two-part drama based on John Braine’s book.
BBC4’s spring and summer season also includes Scrapheap Orchestra, which will see conductor Charles Hazlewood conduct the BBC Concert Orchestra playing instruments made out of junk.
BBC4 controller Richard Klein said: “BBC4 provides enriching television for the discerning viewer, and this season is no exception, bursting with purpose, proposition and passion.”
